Mental health seems to becoming a more and more talked about subject. To date, there is more material and education for mental health then there ever has been. However, despite having access to more material and resources on mental illness there seems to be a misunderstanding among a lot of the population. For instance, anxiety disorders can be difficult for people to understand. There are a wide variety of anxiety disorders, which include post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.
People can be anxious for a number of reasons; giving a presentation, a first date, taking a test, etc. Anxiety is a normal and healthy response to a stressful situation or event however; when anxiety becomes excessive it can impact lives significantly in day-to-day activities. It is important to notice when anxiety starts to significantly impact your ability to do things like go to work, attend school, make or maintain friendships.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. It impacts roughly 40 million Americans, 18% of the population, 18+ years of age. Out of the 40 million Americans suffering from an anxiety disorders only a third receive treatment. Anxiety disorders are treatable and people are able to successfully manage their anxiety. When feeling that anxiety is difficult to control or finding it impacting work or relationships it is important to seek help.
